GPS, but for events — not real-time pings

Most 'GPS asset tracking' products sell a hardware tracker bonded to the asset. That's the right answer for vehicles, trailers and a small set of high-value mobile equipment. It's the wrong answer for laptops, phones, tools and almost everything an IT or office register holds — the cost, the battery and the privacy story don't survive contact with reality.

AssetTrack takes a different angle. Every signed event — issue, return, audit scan, condition check — captures the GPS coordinate of the device making the entry, with the user's permission. So you can answer 'where was this laptop last confirmed in someone's hands?' to within a few metres, without bolting a tracker to it.

Where the coordinate matters most

  • Remote handover: assets dropped off at a customer site, signed for and pinned on the spot
  • Field-service tools: pinned at the job they were used on, not the depot
  • Multi-site audits: confirms the auditor was on-site, not stamping the register from the office
  • Insurance claims: 'last confirmed location' is part of the evidence package when an asset is reported lost or stolen
  • Custodian disputes: removes the 'I left it on my desk' ambiguity

Privacy by design

Location is captured per-event with explicit user consent — never as a background poll. Recipients see exactly what's being stored at the moment they sign. Coordinates are scoped to the organisation, never exposed to other workspaces, and can be redacted on request for any employee. There is no live device-tracking dashboard, because there is no continuous tracking.

Pairs naturally with tracker hardware for the assets that warrant it

For vehicles, trailers and a small set of high-value mobile equipment, a dedicated GPS tracker is still the right answer — AssetTrack stores the tracker reference, the provider URL and the most recent ping alongside the event-level GPS history. RFID and NFC scaffolding for tap-to-confirm at known locations is in place; full reader integrations are on the roadmap.

Frequently asked questions

Is this real-time GPS tracking?

No, by design. AssetTrack captures the GPS coordinate at the moment of a signed event (handover, audit, condition check) — not as a background poll. Real-time tracking is the right tool for vehicles and dedicated tracker hardware; it is the wrong tool for laptops, phones and most office assets.

Will employees see this as surveillance?

Per-event capture with explicit consent at sign time avoids the 'we're tracking you all day' problem. Employees see what's being recorded and have to actively agree before the coordinate stores.

What if the device denies location permission?

The event still records (signature, timestamp, custodian) but with no coordinate. The audit log shows location was declined, not faked.

Can I integrate a hardware GPS tracker for a vehicle fleet?

AssetTrack stores tracker provider, device ID, last-known coordinate and last-ping timestamp on the asset record. Native integrations with leading fleet trackers are on the roadmap; today the data lives on the asset for cross-reference.

Does GPS work offline?

Yes — the device captures the coordinate locally during the signed event and syncs when the network returns, alongside the signature and any photo.
